Gridiron Sports first sprung onto the B.C. sports scene in 1996 as the organizer of Coquitlam Minor Football's first Gridiron Skills Camp. The camp was designed to give kids 8 through 18 years old a pre-season workout that included hot dog lunches, a football jersey and a weekend of football and fun. The camp was a huge success, drawing over 150 participants, and continues on today!
Since then, Gridiron founder, Kevin Phillips has recognized a huge need: "athletes wanting to improve in the off-season". Because so much time in sports is spent on team concepts, team strategy and team cohesion...what about YOU THE ATHLETE? There was a need for a personalized approach, so Gridiron Sports Development Inc. was developed! Athletes have reaped the benefits of a program geared towards PERSONAL ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT which considers the individual's needs paramount.
Our systematic approach:
Free Personal Assessment - injury screening, testing, Q&A session
Meal Plan - fueling the body for optimum performance
Biomechanics - education through sound scientific principles
Strength - building a solid foundation for athleticism
Movement - incorporating biomechanics & strength to produce speed
We are passionate about what we do and it shows!

Kevin Phillips, President and Founder
Kevin Phillips has been a Certified Personal Trainer for over 14 years. His experience has ranged from young children to the young at heart; from the casual indivdual wanting to get in shape, to athletes needing high performance levels of fitness. After growing a vast clientele in the 1990's, Kevin became the general manager of Fitness Avenue (former name of Grim's Gym in Port Moody) one of B.C.'s largest fitness facilities. In 1996, broadening his scope, came a successful coaching debut in the Coquitlam Minor Football Association. Kevin's passion for analyzing movement coupled with his personal training knowledge, led to developing training programs for athletes. This enthusiasm turned to an obsession and ultimately the creation of Gridiron Sports Development Inc.TM, which now leases a facility in Grim's Gym in Port Moody named Gridiron Headquarters. Gridiron HQ contains the tools needed to develop today's athlete including: 3 Olympic-style lift platforms, 3 Hoist multi-station squat racks, 2 bench stations (incline & decline), a full dumbbell station and 2 Hammer Strength stations (deadlift & row). Stability and functional strength equipment comprises of: Bosu balls, swiss exercise balls, multi-strength fitness tubes, bungee straps and cords, weighted bars, medicine balls, Sissel pads, kettle bells, weighted vests, lateral resistance bands, reaction balls, flexibility and strength bands and foam rolls. Our upstairs features abdominal and core stations as well as space for speed and agility. Grim's Gym has a full service, health concsious restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as delicious protein shakes and other healthy snacks.
As a coach, Phillips is a NCCP Level III Football Coach and has been a head coach for over 13 years. Starting his career as the head coach for the Coquitlam Tigers in 1996, Phillips led the Tigers to a 9-1 season and a semi-final appearance. This was just the start for Phillips, as the following year he led the Coquitlam Wildcats to a 10-0 championship season, boasting a 579 points-for offense and only 39 points allowed on defense. This was a start of many championships for Phillips, as over the next 6 years he captured 5 provincial titles ('97, '99, '00, '01, '02) in 3 different age divisions with the Wildcats, Vikings and Chargers. Phillips stock grew quickly and was recruited by Centennial Secondary School to run their depleting football program that suffered an 0-10 season prior to his arrival. After his first season as a coach, the Centaurs were 7-3 and made the playoffs. Now the Centaurs are a perennial power in B.C. High School Football - usually ranked top 5 in the province, only missing the playoffs once in 6 years.
Coach Phillips has served as a guest coach for the Western Washington University Vikings (running backs coach), Simon Fraser University Clansmen (receivers coach) and served on the staff at the B.C. High School Football Senior Bowl. He resides in New Westminster with his partner Milanie and sons Kayne & Eric.
Steve Hanson, Training Specialist and Creator of "Hoop Power"
Steve Hanson was Phillips’ defensive coordinator for 8 years where he led the defenses of the Wildcats, Vikings and Chargers to provincial titles in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004 (’04 not under Phillips). In 2004, Hanson was named “Coach of the Year” - the only assistant coach to take home this honor. After doing it all on the gridiron, Hanson returned to his other passion – basketball. Under the tutelage of Canadian coaching legend, Rich Chambers, Hanson helped lead the Terry Fox Ravens to a 6th place finish at the B.C. Junior Provincial Championships in 2006. More recently, as an assistant, Hanson’s 2008 Varsity Ravens travelled to the Agrodome where they placed 7th - highlighted by a 19-game win streak heading into the provincial tournament. As an athlete, Hanson was the captain of 1992 Ravens basketball squad that returned to the Provincial Championships after a 6 year absence. Hanson's Ravens fell in double overtime, 91-90 to the Belmont Braves the same year Steve Nash's S.M.U. Blue Devlis won the provincial title. In football, Hanson was the leading receiver on a Ravens team that was quarterbacked by B.C. Lions great, Bret Anderson. Steve’s zeal for working with athletes fueled his return to school to complete a Bachelor of Physical Education & Coaching Degree at the Faculty of Sports Science at Douglas College. Kevin uses Steve's keen eye and attention to detail in all of the Gridiron Programs and this teamwork serves all their clients well. Steve is also a NCCP Level II Coach and is working on his BaPE&C. He resides in Port Coquitlam with his wife Mary-Anne and son A.J.
